The Little Wabash [or Little] River was a historically important
navigation link between the Great Lakes and Mississippi waterways. Native
Americans and early European traders used the portage site near Fort Wayne to
travel by canoe across eastern North America. Today, the Little Wabash is
in an area of rapidly changing land use. Agricultural, urban, suburban,
and mining are all important uses of land in the Little Wabash watershed and
each of these have potential effects on water quality.
Watershed Diagnostic Study
The Whitley, Allen, and Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation
Districts are sponsoring a study to enhance water quality in the Little
Wabash River of northeastern Indiana. The project is funded by
the Lake and River Enhancement Program of the Indiana Department of Natural
Resources and will be carried out during 2007 and 2008. (see
schedule).
People who live in the watershed are encouraged to participate in the
planning process by attending meetings, reviewing the available information,
and helping set goals for water quality.
